My work revolves around an engagement with life. Fascinated by the ways in which we exist, communicate and understand the world around us; I hope to create work which invites the audience in through using both sensory and playful elements.

I work across a multitude of processes, and enjoy ways of making which are tactile and often time consuming. My work is greatly shaped by this, with physical characteristics of the work being a reminder of its hand made creation.

I believe what we experience either confirms or challenges what we already know and from this I explore moments which celebrate the beautiful complexities of being alive. Audience engagement forms a huge part of my practice as I hope to extend these interactions beyond simply viewing an artwork.

For the degree show my work is focused on the act of having a meal. β€˜The meal’ explores this as a moment for connection and communication. Stemming from my childhood where all social gatherings were centred around food, I grew up making sense of the world in this rich social environment. I created tender, impractical cutlery which forces the user to slow down and not take themselves too seriously, believing that play and curiosity are crucial to an enjoyment of life. I invite you to sit at the table and join us. The meal provides care and sustenance in family recipes, chocolate cutlery and playful knitting with sweets. The meal is a celebration, a moment to connect. The meal thrives on joyous laughter as play is extended beyond childhood.

The Table Setting

The table is set with a selection of cutlery and plate sets, alongside edible menus and a bread candle holder.

The plates and bowls exist like portraits, indented and marked with the fingerprints of those who attended the meal. The are connected yet individual, each one an reflection of its creation process.

The cutlery is a mix of both ceramic and metal work. Playing with both fragility and strength they aim to mischievously disrupt the audience’s expectations.

A documentation of the final meal - this playful film was projected to align with the physical table. Participants of the meal turn and look out into the exhibition space, engaging the audience in conversation and blurring the two spaces together.

Bright colours and playing with the food allowed for openness and meaningful conversation to flourish.

The audio is created through layering sounds from all of the meals held in the research and development of this work. Reflecting the multiple joyous moments these performative meals allowed for.

An Extended Experience

Within the exhibition, a vending machine filled with handmade and image indented orecchiette. Engraved boxes sat to the right of the machine, available for the audience to engage physically with the work and fill with orecchiette. Secret recipe cards were slipped into a small compartment of the boxes featuring a simple no fuss recipe for pasta and encouraging the audience to move forward from the exhibition to host their own meals and gatherings with friends, strangers and family alike.

The pasta was shaped individually indented using an engraved wooden board which featured instructions to β€˜eat!’ alongside little drawings of knifes forks and the hungry beings.
